Linda that is how steel looks when it has a high fat content. Some of it drips out in the forge and the rest adds flavor.

Not a lot, started out with 7, 2 folds, twist, then 1 fold, what is that 42. Old rasp and some mild steel. May not make a good knife just came out the right size for one. Thanks

I talked to one guy he said it was a 100 something, not sure how to figure the twist i think he was counting that in.

    I started with 7
Cut into 3 pieces- original 7 plus 14

    that makes 21

whatever for the twist- 2 rounds

Then cut in half to make 42

did I figure wrong somewhere first time making any damascus and always wondered about figuring it.

Ok I thought you meant you drew out the 7 layers and folded it twice, 7x2 = 14, draw and fold 14, 14x2 = 28, twist, then draw and fold 28x2=56

We make a lot of tools because apprentices cant afford to buy them and Im to tight! They dont always work as well shop bought tools and sometimes they suprise you and work better. This is tall but works well, we call it the tomahawk fuller .
