Ya but she was probably the type of person who just HAD to have a puppy to go with her on trail rides. Hope she sends a thank you note to your accountant. My favorite was the one who put a couple grand worth of fancy trees around the stable yard, then hinted around for a discount.

I'm very thankful for Jaye's business advice when it comes to these areas. Examples like Dave's are all too common.

What's the point of this statement? I have two luxury items, so therefore I should be more accommodating to others? Sorry I'm not a socialist.

Spot on Red. Best way I've heard it put. It made me think that those I have helped out actually never did ask.

Kim, no joke, you usually you can claim the cost of your horses as a business expense, as long as you can show that you use them for educational and training purposes... Just be sure that you can document that you bought a shoe, pad, product, etc that you had never used before and "tried" them out on your own horses to "learn" if that had any further use in your practice. It's quite legitimate... my own horses have been my "weird science experiments" for years.

Oh, and I have given away a lot of work over the years, but it is usually to those that don't ask and horses that really need it....... most times it comes back to you ten fold........BUT you only get to burn me once!

As to horses being tax exempt, you either are a breeder or a competitor and if you win money you get a 1040 for your earnings.. horses are considered a hobby for the most part so you really need to cover your butt when you claim your own horses as tax exempt..

I've had several clients who said it was more hassle to claim their working horses than it was worth. A rancher said they had to show blood lines to prove their horses were bread for working cattle. Several others would claim my work as compensation to a service contractor.

George you can add Mal to that list. He doesn't regret one little bit giving up his track job.

My brother-in law raced standardbreds in several states before he passed away two years ago; he apparently had a reputation among the shoers as an owner/trainer who actually paid his bills (and did not dictate to shoers how to do their job) and had shoers that were very happy to work for him. My sister-in-law (who is not a horsewoman) still races the horses and still can not get over the fact that there are a number of owners out there who do not pay their shoers.

not sure I want to go back to standardbreds; been too many years. pacers are ok; but the trotters can be pita on gait at full speed. you can reshoe them 5 times; but only get paid 1 time for the changes. and at $50-80 for 4 shoes every 4 weeks.

I feel the same way; tried to get the platers this year together for a clinic when Chris came over in Nov. only 6 showed up; there is no interest in improving shoeing on the track like there was in the 1990's
